Speaker: Don’t Choke Back the Smoke: Building a Business Case for Smoke Evacuation
Kay is Past President of AORN and the AORN Foundation. She worked at the White House during the Clinton Administration’s attempt with healthcare reform. During that time, she received a lot of media training and experience presenting to masses of people. She became an excellent story-teller to reflect her experiences and those of the patients. She also powerfully can relate stories about other nursing circumstances, activities, and challenges to convince others and help them feel her emotions. Kay is very active with ANA-Ohio and Ohio politics and legislation. Her stories about surgical smoke hazards have urged legislators to introduce and support legislation mandating surgical smoke management in Ohio (which was passed in July 2023). She helped many other nurses tell their stories about their exposures to surgical smoke so the nurses’ voices were heard loudly when this issue was introduced.
